What happens now that the deadline to renew DACA has passed?

On September 18, 2017, Governor Gina Raimondo and the Rhode Island Foundation announced that they had received donations in the amount of $170,000 to cover the renewal fee for all Rhode Island residents who are eligible to renew their Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals status.

The deadline to renew DACA status was October 5, 2017 has passed and according to members of the coalition that was helping Rhode Islanders to process their renewal, approximately 73 young adults completed their applications and took advantage of Governor Raimondo’s offer to pay the $495 renewal fee. The numbers approximately break down as follows:

Progreso Latino - 15 applications
Dorcas International - 50 applications
The Catholic Diocese - 8 applications

This figure, however, does not include efforts by local colleges to help DACA students.

Representative of the Rhode Island Center for Justice and CASO, with the above-mentioned organizations will be meeting to discuss how to distribute remaining funds that were donated by the Rhode Island Foundation. More details will be forthcoming.

In the meantime, many of Rhode Island undocumented students currently enrolled in college or getting ready to graduate high school are looking for financial assistance for tuition and books. We are refocusing our attention to fundraising for the Tam Tran Scholarship, a more immediate need while we wait to see what happens to DACA. We appreciate any donations to the fund.
